2019 Chitimacha Powwow

(Charenton, LA) – The Sovereign Nation of the Chitimacha and Chitimacha Powwow Committee is proud to announce the 6th Annual Chitimacha Powwow 2019, presented by Keta Group, LLC, and Inaugural American Indian Art Market. Both events will take place in The Pavilion at Cypress Bayou Casino Hotel. The Chitimacha Powwow and Art Market are open to the public. The Powwow features ceremonial gourd dancing, competition dancing (in a climate-controlled arena with bleacher seating), a hand drum competition, as well as Native and Southern food.

The American Indian Art Market is the perfect place to shop for authentic American Indian jewelry (beaded, silver and copper) flutes, unique T-shirts, and leather items. Children/minors are welcome to attend this family-friendly event. Guests under 21 must be accompanied by an adult to enter the casino and must remain on the minor/under 21 paths.

Coverage of the 5th Annual Chitimacha Powwow 2018 By Louisiana Public Broadcasting (Segment begins 20:21)

On Saturday, October 19, 2019, the Chitimacha Powwow will open to the public at 11 AM, with food and vendors available. The event will continue until approximately 10 PM when after prizes are awarded. Gourd Dances will be held at 12 PM and 6 PM for a ceremonial start. Grand Entry times are approximately 1 PM and 7 PM. The Grand Entry is the procession dancers that begin each competition dance session. It is truly a breathtaking sight with all of the dancers participating, representing the various dance styles and tribes.

The Inaugural American Indian Art Market is also open to the public and will take place on Friday, October 18, from 2 PM to PM; Saturday, October 20, from 9 AM to 10 PM; and Sunday, October 21, from 9 AM to 2 PM. The event will feature approximately 15 vendors with authentic American Indian arts and crafts, as well as, native-inspired items for sale in The Pavilion at Cypress Bayou Casino Hotel.

Cypress Bayou Casino is located 45 miles south of Lafayette on US Hwy 90. It is the oldest Native American casino in Louisiana.

Cypress Bayou began operations in 1988 as Bayou Teche Bingo. It was expanded to a full casino in 1993 and changed its name to Cypress Bayou Casino. Table games were installed in 1994 and dining venues were added in 1997.

Over the years more food outlets were added. The hotel was opened in the summer of 2012.

Cypress Bayou Casino celebrates 25 years

On December 18th Cypress Bayou Casino celebrated its 25th anniversary with a reception at Mr. Lester's Steakhouse. Over the past 25 years this casino has been financially successful for the Chitimacha Tribe and has experience substantial growth in its size and operations.

Cypress Bayou Casino opened in December 1993. It had a bingo hall and a casino floor with 450 gaming machines. This was the first land-based casino in Louisiana.

The casino expanded several times over its 25 years. Today the casino floor is 180,000 square feet and features 1,000 slot machines, 38 table games, poker room and a large bingo hall with 1,200 seats.

Five restaurants have been added: Mr. Lester's Steakhouse, Cafe Delphine, Loco Mexican Grill & Cantina, Fresh, and Mabel's Kitchen.

There are three entertainment venues. These are Rox, a 15,000-square-foot nightclub, The Pavilion and Bocat's Lounge.

In 2012 Cypress Bayou Hotel and an RV Park were added.

Cypress Bayou's employment has grown to 686 people over 25 years. It started with 250 employees in 1993.
